Opening Note

Anthony Madison

Fall is the season when clothes become interesting again.

Texture returns. A jacket can carry weight without feeling formal. A trouser can be fuller, a shoe darker, a fragrance closer to the skin. The best fall wardrobes are not larger. They are simply better connected.

This issue is about those connections: how to wear the pieces, where they belong, and what surrounds them—from the drink on the table to the room itself. Good taste should be lived in, not displayed behind glass.

The Uniform / How to Wear It

Clothes make more sense
when you see the whole thought.

Every uniform answers one question, shows the proportion, and explains the small decision that keeps it from becoming generic.

The Uniform / 01

Navy Zegna Oasi Cashmere long-sleeve polo01

The Saturday Appointment

Soft structure, without looking dressed up.

A navy knit, white collar, pleated khaki and brown penny loafer. The shape is relaxed; the collar and shoe keep it intentional.

Why it works

The argyle sock carries the navy, brown and red quietly. It adds personality without becoming the outfit.

The Suede Jacket

Wear it like tailoring, not costume.

Keep everything around suede clean: a fine-gauge knit, charcoal trouser and dark shoe. No denim shirt. No Western belt. Let the texture do the work.

The proportion

The jacket should finish near the hip and the trouser should fall straight. A narrow pant makes the jacket feel heavier than it is.

Dinner Instead of a Suit

Dark, tonal and slightly softer.

Start with a black or charcoal jacket, add a fine knit instead of a shirt, then use dark denim or a fluid wool trouser. The shoe should remain polished.

The restraint

The interest comes from surface—nubuck, cashmere and polished leather—not a stack of contrasting colors.

The Better Layer

A cardigan can do the work of a jacket.

Choose one with enough body to hold its shape. Wear it over a knit polo or open-collar shirt with a full trouser and a substantial shoe.

The difference

A cardigan looks considered when the trouser has structure. Pairing it with thin, overly casual pants turns the look into loungewear.

The Stronger Shoe

Let one piece interrupt the uniform.

When the clothing is quiet, the shoe can carry more color or texture. Keep the trouser hem clean so the choice looks deliberate.

Where to stop

One interruption is enough. A distinctive shoe does not also need a loud belt, sock and watch strap.

Anthony's Fall Five

Not every trend deserves a place in your closet.

These are the five ideas worth carrying into a real wardrobe—and the houses doing them particularly well.

01

Chocolate suede

Zegna or Tod’s

The easiest way to add depth without adding pattern. Treat it like a sport coat and keep the rest of the look disciplined.

02

Corduroy tailoring

Canali or Ralph Lauren

Look for a fine wale, soft construction and a trouser with room through the thigh. Brown, tobacco and deep olive are the useful colors.

03

The shaped trouser

Canali or made-to-measure

Straight or gently tapered, with a higher rise and one or two pleats. Relaxed should still look intentional.

04

The knit as a shirt

Zegna or Brunello Cucinelli

A fine-gauge polo or mock neck gives a jacket a quieter, more modern line than a traditional dress shirt.

05

A richer shoe

Tod’s, Zegna or Christian Louboutin

Chocolate suede, oxblood leather or polished black. The footwear should finish the silhouette, not disappear beneath it.

From the Bar

The Black Walnut Manhattan

Darker and rounder than the classic, without becoming sweet. The kind of drink that belongs beside a low lamp and a good chair.

What you need

  • 2 oz rye or bourbon
  • ¾ oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes black walnut bitters
  • 1 dash aromatic bitters
  • Orange peel

Make it

Stir everything except the peel with ice until properly chilled. Strain into a cold coupe or Nick & Nora glass. Express the orange oil over the surface and discard the peel—or leave it in if the glass wants the color.

From the Oven

Baked Brie with Pepper Jelly

Red pepper jelly, rosemary and toasted pecans keep the Brie from disappearing into sweetness. Serve it with torn sourdough.

What you need

  • 1 small wheel of Brie
  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 2 tbsp red pepper jelly
  • ⅓ cup toasted pecans
  • Rosemary, black pepper and 1 egg

Make it

Heat the oven to 400°F. Top the Brie with jelly, pecans, rosemary and pepper. Wrap in pastry, seal underneath and brush with beaten egg. Bake 20–25 minutes, until deeply golden. Rest 10 minutes before cutting.

The Collected Room

A room should look collected, not completed.

The best rooms carry the same logic as the best wardrobes: fewer pieces, more character, and enough tension to keep the whole thing from feeling staged.

01

Mix decades

A room becomes interesting when an older chair, contemporary lamp and personal object are allowed to disagree slightly.

02

Light below eye level

Table and floor lamps make a room feel inhabited. Overhead lighting should support the room, not flatten it.

03

Leave evidence of a life

Books, trays, records, fragrance and objects from travel create character. Perfect rooms are rarely memorable rooms.

What fall should smell like

Bois du Portugal,
after eight.

Dry woods, lavender and quiet formality. It works best when the clothes have texture and the room is already warm.
